As custodian of retirement funds, Mr Oliphant says he has a responsibility to consider the long term effects of investment decisions for his fund members. Ms Ramataboe says the current global crisis highlights the importance of ethics and governance issues for all businesses.

Heidi Finksas from KLP Kapitalforvaltning (Oslo, Norway) says the UNPRI is gaining momentum with increased interest in corporate governance. She says as businesses create returns for shareholders it is important to remember how those returns are created. She hopes discussions continue as a result of the UNPRI gathering.

Gavin Power from the UN Global Compact (New York, USA) looks at the integration of ESG issues and investments. Water management will become a greater concern for companies and their investors. Mr Power believes that the CEO Water Mandate is a great tool for companies to use to work with other institutions such as the UN when it comes to water management and he hopes for investors to be able to understand the risk that water scarcity can pose to companies in the long term.

Paul Clements-Hunt from UNEnvironment Programme Finance Initiative (Geneva, Switzerland) says the process of embedding the principles will continue to be challenging, but the PRI community is well positioned to finance a future low carbon economy. Mr Clements-Hunt says there are challenges to making the PRI compulsory that would change the dynamic of how the voluntary scheme currently encourages involvement by investors.
